Jamille Matt came off the bench and scored to make a 1-0 victory over Port Vale to Newport.
The close-range goal of matt usually means the Exiles are currently 17 games unbeaten in League 2 and two points behind leaders Exeter.
Vale may count themselves lucky to have 11 guys after James Gibbons slipped with a late challenge into Robbie Willmott going in at half-time and endured some deep pressure.
Corey Whitely and matt were introduced in the chair and combined to split out the breakthrough.
Whitely jumped down the perfect wing before crossing the ball to score his first of the season.
The Exiles striker was then dragged down in the box with Vale captain Leon Legge but Padraig Amond saw his penalty saved by Scott Brown, diving to his left.
Newport saw out the game to keep their unbeaten start to the season although legge hit the bar with a header in time.
