Joe Root’s job as England captain saved by Oval win against Australia, says Monty Panesar
Former Evaluation spinner Monty Panesar Believes England’s victory against Australia at The Oval Might Have rescued Joe Root.
England captain Root took the catch to dismiss last man Josh Hazlewood and also a 135-run victory at the fifth and final Test, ensuring that his side drew the series 2-2.
However, Panesar – that played 50 Tests between 2006 and 2013 – believes if Australia had managed to assimilate their hosts Root might have dropped the captaincy.
„I feel this week has rescued him” Panesar told Sky Sports News. „If Australia had won 3-1,” I believe that the ECB would have been having that polite talk with him and they would potentially ask him to resign.
„He’s been well, but is it great for the team he captains England in addition to batting? I think since the series has gone on, his kind has improved.
„But he turned it around this week he dug in deep and was able to show he would like to be the individual to lead England. The winter tours are going to be huge for him.
„He needs to succeed against New Zealand and South Africa and when he is really decided to lead England, he wants to show the kind of cricket we have seen this week in The Oval.
„He is obviously still very passionate and he wishes to take that challenge on. We’ll see over the wintertime if he’s in a position to keep his batting form because we understand Joe Root captain the team nicely and can.
„I’m sure within the next six months that the ECB will evaluate the way he performs as a captain and also a batsman and they’ll make a determination.”
Root, who triumphed Alastair Cook in February 2017 as Test captain, was third at the England batting averages throughout the Ashes series, scoring 325 runs in 10 innings.
The series was a swansong for England head coach Trevor Bayliss, who’d announced his departure before a summer where the national men’s team won their initial World Cup that is 50-over.
Panesar would rather see them keep expert coaches operating under an supremo’s present structure, although the ECB have to name a successor to the Australian.
„I think they have to have one head coach and the assistants,” he added. „Ideally I would like them to be English coaches because the ECB have invested heavily in their own coaching programmes and it’s great to find that a stepping stone to the national group.
„The likes of Paul Collingwood and Marcus Trescothick are included in the England setup over the summer, Chris Silverwood is a great quick bowling coach and they have also got Saqlain Mushtaq.
