Joe Root’s job as England captain saved by Oval win against Australia, says Monty Panesar

Former Test spinner Monty Panesar thinks the Success against Australia at The Oval of England may have rescued Joe Root.

England captain Root took the catch to dismiss final guy Josh Hazlewood and also a success in the fifth and final Test, ensuring his side drew the series 2-2.
But Panesar – that played 50 Tests between 2006 and 2013 – believes if Australia had been able to assimilate their hosts to a series defeat Root might have missed the captaincy.
„I feel this week has saved him” Panesar told Sky Sports News. „If Australia had won 3-1, then I believe that the ECB could have been having an polite talk with him and they would potentially ask him to resign.
„He has been well, but can it be good for the staff that he captains England in addition to batting? I believe his form has slightly deteriorated as the show has gone on.
„However he turned around this week – he dug in deep and was able to show he would like to be the individual to lead England. The winter tours are currently going to be enormous for him.
„He wants to succeed against New Zealand and South Africa and if he is really determined to lead Englandhe wants to demonstrate the sort of cricket we’ve seen this week in The Oval.
„He’s obviously still quite passionate and he wants to take this challenge on. We’ll see over the winter months if he’s able to keep his batting form because we understand Joe Root captain and can the team nicely.
„I’m sure over the next six weeks that the ECB will assess the way he performs as a captain and also a batsman and after that they’ll make a choice.”
Root, who triumphed Alastair Cook in February 2017 as Test captain, was third in the England batting averages during the Ashes series, scoring 325 runs in 10 innings.
The string was a swansong for England head coach Trevor Bayliss, who had announced his death before a summer where the federal men’s team won their very first World Cup that is 50-over.
Panesar would prefer to see them retain the structure of pro coaches operating under an total supremo, although the ECB have to mention a successor to the Australian.
„I think they need to have a single head coach and then the supporters,” he added. „Ideally I would like them to become English coaches because the ECB have invested heavily in their coaching programmes and it is great to find that a stepping stone to the national team.
„The likes of Paul Collingwood and Marcus Trescothick have been engaged in the England setup over the summertime, Chris Silverwood is a great quick bowling coach and they’ve also obtained Saqlain Mushtaq.
