Bears kickers come up clutch to end practice early

After a long couple of months, the Bears finally had a kick to cheer about on Thursday.
Head coach Matt Nagy has thrown his group of kickers through the gauntlet this offseason following Cody Parkey’s dreadful playoff double-doink against the Eagles.

After cutting Parkey, Nagy brought in eight kickers a month after which narrowed the list to three — Chris Blewitt, Elliott Fry and Eddy Pineiro — before cutting Blewitt on Wednesday.
With his squad, Nagy wagered on the last day of mandatory minicamp. Pineiro and fry would each attempt a field goal. If kicker missed, the whole team had to experience a conditioning test for the remainder of practice.
At a change of speed, both kickers pinpointed their attempts and Nagy sent everyone home for the summer.
„We put a little heat — shocking — about the kickers for conditioning for the team,” Nagy said, via ESPN. „They nailed two 40-yarders down the center, so our men got from gassers, which was nice. So if you heard any cheering, that is why.
„And then the cool thing was that I kind of got ahead of myself and I said,’You wan na t move double or nothing for the beginning of training camp?’ I thought they would balk, however they hawked me down and wanted more, and also both kickers were the first to jump at it and say,’Let’s go.’ So that was great. They called my bluff. But they are running when we get back [to training camp].”
It is a welcome sight for Chicago to be adopting the kickers in a positive manner heading into the break. But Nagy said Wednesday that the Bears would still maintain their options open over the summer — even outside of Fry and Pineiro — the saga may not be just yet.
