This was no doubter once it left his bat and all the Cubs could do is observe still another winnable game late in innings enter the toilet.
Pedro Strop was triggered by the IL to let him rest following a rough stretch. Last night it had been the exact same as prior for Strop. He allowed two earned runs without recording an out, then left Derek Holland in a tricky situation. I really don’t know how many more discounted games that the Cubs could get away with and still go to the postseason.
With the win, the Phillies dealt the Cubs a sweep at that three-game series. That’s exactly what the Phillies needed to generate some much needed momentum. Moving into that show, the Phillies have been 1-5 in their previous six matches. But, if they follow up the success they had against the Cubs having a dud, then the frustration will start all over again to the Phillies. It has been that kind of year for them, however, the very best sign for these is that Bryce Harper seems to be finding his stroke now. That’s bad news for everyone else who is at the National League wildcard hunt.
The Phillies remain home over the weekend, because they welcome the Padres into Citizens Bank Park for a three-game series. Philadelphia will be traveling in Boston and Miami following this weekend. Chris Paddack was exactly what the Padres were looking for this particular season. Regrettably, it isn’t the one thing that the Padres needed to get over the hump and be a postseason team. With minimal depth on their pitching staff and a cold and hot offense, the Padres have not been in a position to sniff the very top of the NL West. Oddly, the Padres have recorded only two strikes against Vince Velasquez. In 24 at-bats, the Padres are hitting 0.83 without a runs on him. He had been prominent at a 5-0 win over the Padres last season. Velasquez was pitching well lately also. In his previous four outings, he hasn’t allowed more than 4 runs and gave up over 2 runs only once. With momentum and an excited home crowd on both sides, expect the Phillies to notch a win in the series opener from the Padres.
