Manchester United win.
Manchester United defeated a enormous scare against Rochdale, winning a Carabao Cup penalty shootout 5-3 after being held to a 1-1 draw at time.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s negative had wasted a variety of chances before Mason Greenwood (68) scored his second senior target with a thunderous work.
However, Rochdale got themselves back to the third-round tie long after as 16-year-old Luke Matheson (75) levelled for the visitors to finally send the match to penalties.
It turned out to be a expert shoot-out out of United – who scored their spot-kicks all – while some miss from midfielder Jimmy Keohane saw Rochdale agonisingly depart the competition.
United will travel to Chelsea in the fourth round of this Carabao Cup.
United dominated the first half but wasted a number of opportunities. Some marvellous rescue from Rochdale goalkeeper Robert Sanchez kept out them, along together with his two stops. He leapt to deny Tahith Chong ahead of a shot from Andreas Pereira. He had been at it again seven minutes later before Marcos Rojo nodded wide as he kept out a header of Jesse Lingard.
When the Paul Pogba wasted a chance, united’s best opportunity of the opening period came in the 35th minute. Greenwood floated a pass in for the Frenchman, who ran forward to meet with it, but, with the goal at his mercy, he frustratingly directed his header over the crossbar from six yards out.
Greenwood might have spanned a goal five minutes later but another superb Sanchez stop kept outside his attack. Not long after, Lingard directed a header wide of the article again as United suffered a frustrating first half.
It was Rochdale who had a sensational chance early in the second half. Former Man Utd academy merchandise Oliver Rathbone danced before cutting the ball back into Callum Camps inside a place. But, a bicycle kick scraped off his shot the line from Aaron Wan-Bissaka at a bit of protecting.
United produced a breakthrough that was deserved at the 68th minute with a rocket out of Greenwood. The hosts played across the area before the 17-year-old was slid by Lingard down the right of the box. Before hammering a shot into the back of the net for his second senior goal, he nipped away from Rhys Norrington-Davies.
But seven minutes later, Rochdale obtained themselves level. A long pass accumulated on the left, before looping a shot into the atmosphere controlling it. It did not seem like it would trouble United, before Matheson came back in to flick the ball home via a packed six-yard box before celebrating.
United continued to push for the winner, but were not able to make the breakthrough since the tie went to a punishment shoot-out. The hosts went and scored each of their penalties, but a miss from Keohane, who saw Rochdale’s second kick saved by Sergio Romero, ultimately sealed their departure from the competition.
This was another impressive performance from Greenwood up-front as he proceeds to show hints of what he can bring to Manchester United. He chose his goal while several opportunities were missed by him and it was a strike that beat a confident goalkeeper.
In addition, he scored a punishment in the shootout, not revealing any flash of this strain he may have been under, and he should be happy with his operation.
While it wasn’t the functionality from Manchester United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was amazed by 17-year-old Greenwood as well as their opponents Rochdale.
He said”Penalty shoot-outs can go either way. I believed Rochdale were fantastic, we studied and analysed them and they are a little unorthodox, but they are confident and the way it was fantastic tonight to watch them.
„We’re through, so we’re contented with that and that’s one also. The second is the lovers, they have been incredible and the next were penalties. They had been composed and the boys loved taking them.
„You always want a quality in the last third and we lacked that at times. They defended well, naturally we should have scored a number of goals, but we have talked about it several times that when you don’t take your chances, it’s going to be a challenging night but we have got Mason who knows where the objective is.
„He also scored a good goal today as well and he is a confident finisher but you’ve got to rememberthat he’s 18 next week give him some the time and he will be a very good player.”
Rochdale manager Bryan Barry-Murphy was so happy with how his side played in Old Trafford at what he called the”experience of a lifetime”.
He said:”I think that it was a very successful day for us. If we are attempting to become perfectionists, you would say we would need to win the tie and move through and not observe being pumped out of the contest but our lads gave everything from the start in this competition right.
„For the men about the pitch and around the sides, it had been the experience of a lifetime and one they’ll aspire to replicate as they progress through their careers.”
It’s a huge game for Man Utd following Thursday before traveling to AZ Alkmaar at the Europa League next as they host Arsenal on Monday Night Football. To get Rochdale, they sponsor Wycombe at League One on Saturday.
