Joe Root’s job as England captain saved by Oval win against Australia, says Monty Panesar
Former Test spinner Monty Panesar Believes England’s Success against Australia at The Oval may have rescued Joe Root by the Sofa.
England captain Root took the catch to dismiss last guy Josh Hazlewood and clinch a 135-run victory in the fifth and final Test, ensuring his side drew the series 2-2.
But Panesar – who played 50 Tests between 2006 and 2013 – feels when Australia had managed to condemn their hosts into a series 32, Root may have lost the captaincy.
„I feel this week has saved him,” Panesar told Sky Sports News. „If Australia had won 3-1,” I think the ECB could have been having that polite talk with him and they would possibly ask him to resign.
„He has been batting well, but can it be great for the group he captains England in addition to batting? I believe as the show has gone on, his form has deteriorated.
„But he turned it around this week he dug in deep and managed to reveal he would like to be the individual to lead England. The winter tours are going to be huge for him.
„He needs to do well against New Zealand and South Africa and when he’s really decided to lead England, he wants to demonstrate the type of cricket we’ve seen this week at The Oval.
„He is obviously still very passionate and he would like to take this challenge on. We are going to see over the winter months if he’s ready to keep his form as we know Joe Root captain the team nicely and can.
„I’m sure within the next six weeks the ECB will evaluate the way he performs as a captain and also a batsman and then they’ll make a choice.”
Root, who triumphed Alastair Cook in February 2017 as Test captain, was third in the England batting averages scoring 325 runs in 10 innings.
The string was a swansong for England head coach Trevor Bayliss, who’d announced his departure prior to a summer in which the national men’s team won their initial 50-over World Cup.
The ECB have to name a successor but Panesar would rather see them keep pro coaches operating under an supremo’s present structure.
„I think they have to have a single head coach and then the supporters,” he further added. „Ideally I’d like them to be English coaches since the ECB have invested heavily in their own coaching programmes and it’s nice to find a stepping stone into the national team.
„The likes of Paul Collingwood and Marcus Trescothick are involved in the England set-up over the summertime, Chris Silverwood is a great fast bowling coach and they’ve also got Saqlain Mushtaq.
