Joe Root’s job as England captain saved by Oval win against Australia, says Monty Panesar

Former Evaluation spinner Monty Panesar Believes England’s Success against Australia at The Oval Might Have rescued Joe Root.

England captain Root chose the catch to dismiss last man Josh Hazlewood and clinch a 135-run success at the final and fifth Test, ensuring his side drew the series 2-2.
However, Panesar – that played 50 Tests between 2006 and 2013 – believes Root may have dropped the captaincy when Australia had were able to assimilate their hosts to a series defeat.
„I feel this week has rescued him” Panesar told Sky Sports News. „If Australia had won 3-1, then I think the ECB would have been having that polite conversation with him and they would possibly ask him to resign.
„He has been batting well, but can it be great for the group that he captains England in addition to batting? I think as the series has gone , his form has slightly improved.
„However he turned it around this week he dug in deep and was able to reveal he would like to be the individual to lead England. The winter tours are currently going to be big for him.
„He wants to succeed from New Zealand and South Africa and if he is really determined to lead Englandhe needs to show the type of cricket we’ve seen this week at The Oval.
„He’s obviously still quite passionate and he wishes to take this challenge on. If he is able to maintain his form as we understand Joe Root captain the team nicely and can we’ll see over the winter months.
„I am sure over the next six weeks the ECB will evaluate how he plays as a captain and also a batsman and after that they’ll make a choice.”
Root, who succeeded Alastair Cook as Test captain at February 2017, was third at the England batting averages throughout the Ashes series, scoring 325 runs in 10 innings.
The drawn series was a swansong for England head coach Trevor Bayliss, who’d announced his departure before a summer where the men’s team won their first World Cup.
Panesar would rather see them keep professional coaches operating under an supremo’s present structure, although the ECB have to name a successor to the Australian.
„I think they need to have a single head coach and the supporters,” he added. „Ideally I’d like them to be English coaches because the ECB have invested heavily in their coaching programmes and it is great to see that a stepping stone into the national team.
„The likes of Paul Collingwood and Marcus Trescothick are involved in the England set-up over the summer, Chris Silverwood is an excellent fast bowling coach and they’ve also obtained Saqlain Mushtaq.
