Jamille Matt came off the bench and scored to make Newport a 1-0 victory over Port Vale.
Matt’s close-range purpose usually means the Exiles are unbeaten in League Two and two points behind leaders Exeter.
Vale may count themselves fortunate to have 11 men going in at half-time later James Gibbons slid into Robbie Willmott with a late night, full-blooded challenge and survived some heavy first-half pressure.
Corey Whitely and matt were introduced in the chair and united to split the breakthrough .
Before crossing the ball to score his first of the year, whitely surged down the perfect wing, leaving Adam Crookes in his wake.
Padraig Amond saw his penalty saved by Scott Brown, diving although Vale captain Leon Legge then draged down into the box the Exiles striker.
Legge hit the bar with a header in time however Newport saw the game out.
