Jamille Matt came off the bench and scored to earn a 1-0 victory over Port Vale to Newport.
The close-range target of matt means the Exiles are currently 17 games unbeaten in League 2 and two points behind leaders Exeter.
Vale might count themselves lucky to have 11 men going in at half-time after James Gibbons slipped using a late night challenge and survived some deep first-half pressure.
Matt and Corey Whitely were introduced from the bench and combined to carve the breakthrough out.
Whitely surged down the right wing, leaving Adam Crookes in his wake, before crossing the ball to score his first of the season after 77 minutes.
Padraig Amond saw his penalty saved by Scott Brown, diving although Vale captain Leon Legge then draged down in the box the Exiles striker.
Newport saw the game to keep their unbeaten start to the season out although legge hit the bar with a header in time.
